kangaroo mother care

This wonderfully inspiring video hits close to home for me.  While pregnant with my son, I went into pre-term labor at 26 weeks.  After eighteen hours of contractions, fortunately my water did not break and the doctors were able to stop the labor.  We were terrified...our lives could be so different now if we didn't have such amazing care available to us. We are very lucky that he was a healthy, full term baby.  Now pregnant with baby number two, I am thankful with every passing day that I don't go into early labor again.

A very simple solution is helping to reduce the number of pre-term babies in Malawi who die due to low birth weight. The Kangaroo Mother Care program, supported by USAID and Save the Children, teaches mothers how to increase the body temperatures of their newborns by wrapping the babies to their bare chests.

Amazing.

  1. My flute teacher in Colombia used this method and it was amazing how her son did so well...he was as small as a little bird and survived splendidly! Her determination was amazing and the "bebe kanguro" (as called in Colombia) works. He is now in his late teens...and much taller than I am!
